8 Tips for Keeping Your Swiss Watch ‘Healthy’

If you got a new Swiss watch for the holidays, congratulations.
Here’s a few tips to keep it in tip-top shape for years to come:

1. Clean your watch regularly. Use an old, soft toothbrush or a toothpick and a slightly damp cloth to gently scrub away debris. Alternatively, you can take it into a jeweler’s store and have it cleaned ultrasonically.

2. Use a clean soft cloth to wipe down the band, if it is leather. If the band is metal, use a toothbrush and soapy water to gently clean.

3. Never wear a leather band watch in water.

4. Replace broken or badly scratched crystals before dust and moisture has a chance to damage the movement.

5. Keep an eye on the watch bracelet or strap to make sure it is secured to the dial.

6. If you have a mechanical watch, make sure it is serviced regularly (usually 3 to 5 years) to maintain adequate lubrication between the moving parts, as well as continued water resistance.

7. If your watch isn’t water resistant, be careful not to expose the case directly to water.

8. Don’t expose your watch to extreme temperatures or magnetism.
